The launching of the WHRDs Campaign in Freetown, Sierra Leone

The launching of the Campaign in Sierra Leone took place on 26 July 2005 and was organized by Forum of Conscience, Sierra Leone, Legal Access through Women Yearning for Equality Rights and Social Justice (LAWYERS), Sierra Leone and the International Service for Human Rights.

About 30 women from different women and human rights organizations participated and raised their voices in support for the campaign. They highlighted the very difficult task that women have asserting women's rights in Sierra Leone, in general and the great challenges facing women human rights activists in particular. The Women HRD highlighted the need to raise awareness about the rights that women have to be activists and the risks they face. One participant mentioned that FGM is still a taboo topic and women activists have difficulty raising issues which are seen to be linked to tradition. One other participant raised her voice to say that in Sierra Leone women defenders stand alone and feel isolated, because often even women don’t understand their plight. Another two participants denounced the assassination in 2004, of Fanny Ann Eddy, a lesbian rights activist, in Sierra Leone and he act that her death has remained unpunished.
