Nepal, 30th April 2012: Women Human Right Defender Ranju Jha, killed in a bomb blast in Janakpur

Women’s Human Rights Defender Ranju Jha was killed in a bomb blast, in Janakpur, Nepal on Monday 30 April. Ranju Jha was a 32-year-old women’s human rights defender especially of the rights of madhesi women, theatre artist affiliated with Mithila Natyakala Parishad. A mother of two sons, she worked for social transformation through theatre. She was killed while sitting in protest demanding an autonomous mithila state in federal Nepal. She was a strong feminist and women’s human rights defender, raising strong voices through theatre.

Four people were killed and 31 others injured when a powerful bomb exploded near a group of demonstrators at Ramananda chowkin Janakpur on Monday, 30 April.

In Nepal different groups and tribes are protesting for their rights in the new constitution. Women rights activists in Kathmandu are also protesting, demanding a different and timely constitution. The new constitution is going to be promulgated on 28th May. We all are doing several different campaigns in Nepal. It is a very transitional phase and all activists are at risk.

WOREC Nepal protested against the event and murder cases of human rights defenders at 1pm on May 1st at a silent rally in Kathmandu.
